Black physicians in residency and their experiences
By: Jane M. Liebschutz, MD, MPH; Godwin 0. Darko, MD, MPH; Erin P. Finley; Jeanne M. Cawse; Monica Bharel, MD; and Jay D. Orlander, MD, MPH
Many academic medical organizations issued statements in response to demand for collective action against racial injustices and police brutality following the murder of George Floyd in May 2020. These statements may offer insight into how medical schools and national organizations were reflecting on and responding to these incidents. The authors sought to empirically examine the initial statements published by academic medical organizations in response to societal concerns about systemic, anti-Black racism.
Some say the lack of Black physicians is a pipeline problem, with too few Black people going to medical school. I say it’s a gaslighting problem.
Black Physicians of Canada acknowledges the historical oppression of lands, cultures and the original Peoples in what we now know as Canada and fervently believe in contributing to the healing and decolonizing journey we all share together.
